The Story
Rock and Roll: Deep and Wide
This has nothing to do with business; it’s just for fun. Welcome to a massive rock & roll playlist with over 3,000 songs. There are no duplicates and no full albums dumped in. Every song has been individually picked. The selections run deep within the catalogs of many artists. Further, it includes a wide variety of different rock bands. This is not a mellow mix. While there are some chill songs, it is mostly very energetic.
I started building this playlist 20 years ago before my son was born. In the beginning, I would have to burn individual songs from CDs to my computer. I eventually moved it over to Spotify and other platforms. Originally, I built two different mixes for my children, Cole and Amber, so they would always have something by which they could know me: my love of music. I wanted to give them an education in rock and great songs from other genres. When driving, we sometimes play this mix and play a trivia game where they have to guess the artist.
This has since become a lifelong passion for finding great riffs, hooks, melodies, basslines, solos, and guitar playing. After the first two mixes, I started building more mixes in honor of my three godchildren, family, and others close to me. The Rock University mix is a combination of all of those mixes I made and continue to make.
The selections are not based on how famous the songs are. Many famous rock songs did not make the cut. The songs are simply my favorites. The mix is mostly up-tempo Rock, Alternative, Classic Rock, Punk, Hard Rock, Celtic Rock, and Blues. There is a fair bit of Ska, Reggae, Metal, and Pop. There are even a handful of Country and Hip-Hop tracks. If you are interested, at the bottom of this page is a chart with each band and how many songs I have included in the mix by them. Apparently, I really like The Stones.
My favorite way to listen to this is definitely in shuffle mode. It’s like a radio station with all great songs and it takes nearly a week of 24/7 listening to hear a repeat. You won’t get that on FM radio.
If you enjoy the Rock University playlist, please consider a gift to MusiCares to support members of the music community in need.
Rock on,
